Lazy Sunday

My random thoughts in list form:

1. Our place came furnished (as rentals do here), and I'm so glad the couch is comfy for napping.

2. We have no TV and no internet yet. Interesting how much it changed a lazy Sunday for me.

3. You need a license to own a television in Ireland.

3. In Cork, houses & buildings generally do not have front lawns. The doors open onto the sidewalk. Gardens (as lawns are called) are in the back. It makes the streets have a very different look and feel to them.

4. There are a lot of people from Poland in Cork. This surprised me, but I suppose during the Celtic Tiger boom Poles must have come to take advantage of the booming economy when theirs was not doing as well...? Does anyone know if I'm right? What's the story behind this?

5. The Lee River that we see from our window rises and lowers every day. It has a daily tide.... who knew?

6. When people say "your man" here, they mean "that guy". Example: Your man, the grocer, gave me too much change for my groceries today. = That guy, the grocer, gave me too much change for my groceries today.

7. They say Happy Christmas here. I have barely heard anyone say Merry Christmas.

8. There are a few goth teenagers around. I find them cute and ugly. I know this is not the reaction they are going for, and it makes me feel old.

9. We are leaving for Snitterfield, England tomorrow. We'll be spending Hannukkah & Christmas with Jon's cousin and her family there. They celebrate both holidays, so it should be fun. Then we may head to London for a few days to visit some friends, and we may be there for New Year's. Ooooh, New Year's Eve in London!

  2. Ha! Funny you should ask.... It's the truth, I really am exuberant, but I guess sometimes it doesn't show. I'm multi-faceted I suppose, like all people.
Thanks for for the bloggy compliments - Great to know someone is reading & enjoying!

  3. sorry to be so late on commenting...but you need a licence to own a television? interesting. do tell about the process of determining whether you are worthy of owning one. i'm imagining some fantastical world where all the people who own televisions are actually invested in what airs on it...

  4. Tenny, I think I should leave you in your creative and wonderful fantastical world. The truth is much more mundane and dreary. As far as I can tell, every TV owner simply pays a fee to be able to use their TV, period. We've already met a few who...ahem... don't seem to worry too much about that rule, but in general it is the norm to register one's television.
